Love of Learning, Love of Life, Love of One Another

Our School Curriculum

At Kirkby and Great Broughton CE VA Primary, we offer a broad, balanced and rich holistic curriculum, which promotes the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils at the school, preparing pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of secondary school & beyond.

The school curriculum comprises all the learning and other experiences we offer; the national curriculum and early years foundation stage statutory framework (EYFS) form one part of our school curriculum.

Further information on the National Curriculum 2014 and the EYFS Statutory Framework is available through the links below.

Our bespoke school curriculum is underpinned by the following principles:

Our Curriculum will be literacy-rich

  • A literacy-rich curriculum will immerse children in high-quality texts. Children will develop into confident readers and writers with the acquisition of rich language. Children will develop a lifelong love of reading and writing.

Our Curriculum will be enquiry-led

  • An enquiry-led curriculum will provide children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to think critically, to question and to reason. Children will be taught to listen to others, respect different viewpoints and to be open-minded during debates and discussions. It will support children in developing resilience by seeing mistakes as a learning opportunity.

Our curriculum will be rooted in Christian values, specifically but not exclusively our school’s core Christian values, Love Friendship and Forgiveness

  • A curriculum rooted in Christian values will teach children to be confident, caring and considerate It will encourage children to be responsible citizens who have the skills and understanding to develop into well-rounded individuals.

Our curriculum will be infused with memorable first-hand learning experiences

  • A curriculum rich in first-hand learning experiences will make learning memorable. It will enrich the learning experiences of all children and promote awe and wonder.

Our curriculum will be a cross-curricular project-based approach

  • A thematic curriculum built on four distinct stages of learning that actively promote children’s learning and thinking – Engage Develop Innovate & Express, using the Cornerstones curriculum model.
